High-flying Jayhawks pay visit to struggling Cornhuskers

01/29/2007 - Lincoln, NE (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Winners of 12 of their last 13 games, the eighth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks pull into Lincoln for tonight's Big 12 Conference clash with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

With a mark of 5-1 in league play, Kansas is in a three-way tie for first place in the Big 12 and is fresh off a 97-74 triumph over visiting Colorado on Saturday. The Jayhawks improved to 12-1 at home and 18-3 on the year, but two of those losses came on the road so coach Bill Self's club must be focused to avoid making it a third.

As for Nebraska, it has dropped four of its last five games, including a 61-45 verdict at Kansas State on Saturday. As a result, the Cornhuskers currently sit at 12-7 on the year and just 1-4 in conference. The good news is the club is an impressive 9-1 at home in 2006-07, so there is some reason for confidence heading into tonight's bout.

Kansas owns a commanding 159-71 lead in the all-time series between the two teams, and the Jayhawks have won each of the last six meetings and 15 of the last 16 overall. That said, the Huskers own a 16-14 mark versus KU at the Devaney Center.

Mario Chalmers and Brandon Rush each scored 21 points in leading Kansas to its 23-point victory over Colorado on Saturday. The two talented guards combined to go 16-of-25 from the field and each nailed a trio of treys, helping the Jayhawks shoot 55.6 percent overall and a sizzling 64.7 percent from beyond the arc. Add to that a 16-of-19 effort from the free throw line and a defensive effort that forced a whopping 30 turnovers and it's easy to see why coach Self's club came out on top. KU also got double digits from Russell Robinson and Sherron Collins with 12 and 11 points, respectively, and perhaps the one glaring area of concern from the win was that the Jayhawks were guilty of 19 turnovers themselves. Rush heads a list of four players currently averaging double figures in scoring for Kansas with his 14 ppg, and he is the team's top three-point shooter (.402). As for Chalmers, he is close behind with 11.9 ppg, doing so on the strength of his near 50 percent shooting effort from the field overall. Julian Wright and Darrell Arthur are netting 11.1 and 11.0 ppg, respectively, with Wright serving as the team's top rebounder with 7.8 rpg. Not surprising, Kansas owns favorable margins in scoring (+17.6), rebounding (+5.6) and turnovers (+3.5), while converting 48.9 percent of its total shots and allowing the opposition to do so just 37.5 percent of the time.

Far from the most explosive offensive team in the Big 12, Nebraska instead relies on stingy defensive play to garner most of its success as foes are generating just 61 ppg to this point in the season. The Cornhuskers have proven an opportunistic bunch, taking advantage of nearly 17 turnovers per contest, but they must do a better job on the glass as they are being outrebounded on a nightly basis. Aleks Maric, the team's leading scorer on the season at roughly 18 ppg and the Big 12's top shooter, was the only Husker to reach double figures in the club's recent loss at Kansas State, netting 10 points on just 4-of-12 shooting from the field. Maric grabbed a game-high- tying nine rebounds as well, but was guilty of four of the team's 10 turnovers. As a team, Nebraska dropped just 36.7 percent of its total shots in the game which included a dismal 4-of-20 showing from three-point land. The Cornhuskers also struggled from the charity stripe (5-of-12) and were outscored badly off turnovers (17-4) as well as in bench points (24-6).
